Nationals Not Sweet For Candyman
Repeating as a champion in any sport has been proven to be challenging,
and former National Champion Kyle "Candyman" Klontz found
that to be true as well as he was upset by DFL champion Wallstreet
42-29. After a solid round robin in which he won all three of his
games, the champ looked to be in rare form. He had a massed a 52
point average margin of defeat, but that was only good enough for
a 3rd seed overall. HMFL fellow Champ had secured the top seed in
the tourney with his 67 point differential in the round robins.
Nevertheless, the #3 overall seed was good enough for a #1 seed
in Region III of the single elimination brackets. After cruising
through the first round of Survivor Sunday, Candyman, with his parents
watching on, entered into a dog fight with the business like Wallstreet.
The DFL champ broke the game open with good solid defensive play
in the second half. The two had met in the DFW Lone Star Shoot-out
earlier in the season. Candyman won that tourney, and defeated Wallstreet
along the way to the title 39-3. But Wallstreet may have been at
his best at Nationals III, and it his best to dethrone one of the
great players in the Nation in the defending champ.
After the game
Candyman was all class paying tribute to his opponents skills. This
was certainly one of the biggest upsets of the tourney because it
seemed as though Candyman and Trapjaw were certainly headed for
a date in the finals with either Will or Lou. But that's why they
play the games Now the former champ must refocus, and prepare for
what very well be a west coast Nationals IV next year.
